CDC Analysis Provides New Look at Disproportionate Impact of HIV and Syphilis Among U.S. Gay and Bisexual Men (March 10, 2010)
A data analysis released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscores the disproportionate impact of HIV and syphilis among gay and bisexual men in the United States. The data, presented at CDC’s 2010 National STD Prevention Conference, finds that the rate of new HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men (MSM) is more than 44 times that of other men and more than 40 times that of women. The range was 522-989 cases of new HIV diagnoses per 100,000 MSM vs. 12 per 100,000 other men and 13 per 100,000 women.
The rate of primary and secondary syphilis among MSM is more than 46 times that of other men and more than 71 times that of women, the analysis says. The range was 91-173 cases per 100,000 MSM vs. 2 per 100,000 other men and 1 per 100,000 women. more

Half of All Syphilis Cases in Houston among MSM
For the period, January 1, 2009 thru May 31, 2009, 50% of all reported cases of syphilis were among men who have sex with other men (MSM). Of these men, 59% were black/African-American, while 22% were Hispanic/Latino and 19% were white. The other half of the cases in Houston/Harris County were among heterosexual men and women - 19% females and 31% males.
For the same reporting period, 57% of all cases of syphilis were among Black/African-Americans. 22% were Hispanic/Latinos and 19% were white.
When you look at the ages of people infected with syphilis, most of them are young. 38% of syphilis cases in the first half of 2009 were in their 20s and 26% were in their 30s. Most alarming is the fact that 11% of all cases of syphilis were among adolescents ages 15-19.

Dallas/Fort Worth Stomps Out Syphilis
The Dallas/Fort Worth Syphilis Elimination Coalition is also trying to raise awareness about syphilis in north Texas. The coalition of community agencies, including Resource Center of Dallas, AIDS Arms, Inc. and both Dallas and Tarrant County public health departments, created a campaign called Stomp Out Syphilis (SOS) to inform the public about syphilis.
If you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and need to be tested for syphilis, you can find testing locations and hours on their website: stompout.org.
